Potts Point, 2024/25

Commissioned in 2024 by interior designer Jacci Samios, the Potts Point Dining Table was designed as a sculptural centrepiece for a newly renovated double-storey apartment within the iconic Ikon Apartments in Potts Point. The entire design process took place remotely; I never met the client or Jacci in person. The relationship was built almost entirely on trust: finish samples and 1:1 mockups, including the edge profile, were posted between Melbourne and Sydney so every detail could be approved by feel and by eye before a single cut was made.

Crafted entirely from solid American white oak and finished in a rich bitter chocolate tone, the table explores the warmth and depth of timber through bold, monolithic forms. Each leg is detailed with a unique radius and an asymmetrically positioned brass inlay, developed with a custom patina to introduce subtle contrast. The tabletop features an asymmetric profile that tapers at both ends, creating a more intimate setting when the clients are not hosting. A soft chamfer with a rolled edge completes the form.

Once complete, the table was driven personally from Melbourne to Sydney for installation. Getting it into the apartment proved to be its own project. In the building's goods lift, the doors were held open too long while manoeuvring the table, triggering the alarm and sending them into motion to close. The top had to be rushed clear in seconds and there happened to a recess in the lobby that allowed to the table out without touching the walls. From there, the table still had to travel up an internal spiral staircase; the builder delayed installing the safety rail specifically so there was room to bring it through.

The interplay of solid timber, aged brass, and sculptural geometry gives the piece a commanding yet understated presence, allowing it to function equally as a work of sculpture and a place for gathering.
